Band History

Whiston is a picturesque village in the south of Rotherham in South Yorkshire and it has boasted a Brass Band for over 100 years. The current Band was reformed in 1984 to keep up this traditional aspect of the local community. The reformed Band attracted some talented players and soon became established by winning competitions and performing in a wide variety of concerts.

Some gala somewhere !! Ask John where!!

The band went through a difficult time in 1989, but amalgamated with the Rotherham Town Band who were also struggling and began to prosper again under the Whiston identity. After the restoration of the Manorial Barn in 1991 the band moved its rehearsals to this building and is very privileged to have such splendid and historic surroundings to foster the making of music. The band has steadily grown in size and stature and now has a Senior Band, Junior Band ‘Barn Brass’ and a beginner’s section. The senior Band undertakes numerous concert engagements during the year and can be seen supporting many events and civic functions.

In November 1998 the Band was awarded a grant from the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England and purchased a set of quality instruments. Boosted by this award, the Band Decided that a concert uniform would complement the new sound and purchased this at the end of 1999 with the help of sponsorship.
